The end of another homeschool year is just around the corner and although I’ve been excitedly planning for the next year, there are still a few weeks left in our term and I want to finish well.
Here’s what finishing well looks like for our homeschool:
✨ Slow mornings to enjoy breakfast and time outside and to play before reaching for the books
✨ Remember that life skills are also a part of a living education. Those days spent baking, building, and doing everyday home habits are forming my children’s education just as well
✨ Not rushing to finish a book or curriculum for the sake of finishing in this term, but staying consistent and present in lessons, and preparing to utilize those hot Summer days for “soft starts”, which will help transition us to the new homeschool year
✨ Sticking an unfinished book in the free reads basket for us to grab and finish in the afternoons
✨ Math games and math drills count
✨ Adding more snacks
✨ Change the scenery for lessons
✨ Open conversations about what my children liked and disliked about the homeschool year. What were their favorite books, and subjects?
✨ Celebrate a finished book or term milestone with a sweet treat and their picture taken with their finished book/curriculum to send to grandparents
✨ Give them a peek at next year’s books and share the excitement for what’s coming
Reflection and Discussion Interviews
At the end of a term or year, we have a couple of days of exams and then I like to sit down with each of my children, one on one, and have a moment to ask some intentional questions about our homeschool. This not only allows them to share more about what they liked or disliked about their subjects and books/curricula but also has given us a chance to work through and troubleshoot better schedules, intentional afternoon activities they’re interested in, and honestly, just a chance to get to know them a little better.
Reflection and discussion “interviews” have been a thing in our homeschool since my oldest was in Year 1 and you can now use the same questions for interviews in your homeschool if you’d like to add them to end-of-term/year exams and celebrations.

Finishing well will look slightly different for every family, so feel free to add to my list in the comments! What does finishing well look like in your homeschool?
