Cozily enjoying a little bit of my Sunday Sabbath while I get our homeschool plans out on paper for the week ahead ✨

We’ve got two more weeks left in term two of Year 4 and Year 1, and my plan is to move right into term three for a few weeks before we settle into another short break.

Our first week back into lessons was just the refresh we needed to get back into our rhythms and routines around the home, though, of course with a few bumps along the way.

I posteponed sharing my 2025 reading plans until after the new year because I personally needed every last minute in 2024 to hit my reading goals 😆

I shared how mid-year, 2024 brought a reading slump, so by the time I climbed out of that, we were heading full speed into birthday season, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Typically, that’s when I tend to naturally slow down my reading to make room for the holiday season. Then, we got hit with 3 weeks of illness and I feel like we’re just now emerging out from that.

So, to say our 3 week long homeschool break felt more like a blur than restful and enjoyable is the understatment of our 2024. However, we tried to make the most of it the best we could.

Now that it’s 2 days into 2025, and with a few days left in our break, I finally sat down to write out my 2025 Mother Culture Reading Plans and it’s now live on the blog! 🎉

What I’m reading lately 🕯️✨📖

Confession— I’ve been in a reading slump.

It’s been going on for months, and I (jokingly) told my husband that I don’t know who I am anymore because I haven’t picked up a book and read consistently for a long while.

Now, I know my identity isn’t in my book reading, but reading is something that I genuinely enjoy doing, whether I have to make the time or when I have free time.

So how did I get into a reading slump?

I think it was a number of things, that began last year. The loss of two grandmothers during the holiday season, the health of my youngest, my own health, dealing with loneliness, and just trying to stay afloat in an ever-going lifestyle in the midst of everything.

While I’m a huge advocate to keeping habits of reading in my life (outside my Bible reading), I hadn’t in the time where I thought I would have needed it most.

Despite the challenges and trials, I’m slowly finding my way back into the pages of my books and here’s a few ways I’m coming out of a long reading slump:

📖 Revisiting old favorites. While some might find this the perfect opportunity to grab a new book, my stamina to find my next new read is so low, that revisiting old favorites, in any genre, takes little mental effort, and revisiting beloved books from my shelves reminds me why I love reading in the first place.

🕯️Set small goals. I needed to zoom in on my reading goals, focusing on daily reading, rather than zooming out on monthly or even a whole week’s worth of reading. I zoom in even further and aim for just 10 short minute increments in the morning, in the afternoon, and again in the evening, increasing the amount of time when it makes sense, but not feeling bad about my goal if 10 minutes is all I can give.

🎧Audiobooks vs music. In these last several months, my ear buds have been filled with music rather than podcasts or audiobooks. Though my heart and soul truly feel nourished in lyrics of music in this season, I began listening to an audiobook again during dinner prep and it’s been an easy way to get in some chapters.
