For our 2024-2025 homeschool year, we will be diving into ancient world history, which my kids are looking forward to!

In our Charlotte Mason homeschool, history isn’t just a collection of facts and dates; it’s a vibrant tapestry woven with stories, people, and events. That’s why we turn to living books—rich narratives written by authors who have a passion for their subjects. These books breathe life into our history lessons, transporting us to different times and places through vivid descriptions, compelling storytelling, and nuanced perspectives. They invite us to walk alongside historical figures, and understand the complexities of the human experience in ways that dry textbooks simply can’t.
We will spend 12 weeks (our entire first term) immersing ourselves in in ancient Egypt history including topics on the Exodus story, pyramids, pharaohs, tales and myths of the time, hieroglyphs, and more.
Here is the book selections for our ancient Egypt history studies:
- The Story of the World Volume 1 by Susan Wise Bauer
- Children’s ESV Bible (any will do, but we love this version!)
- Tales of Ancient Egypt by Roger Lancelyn Green
- Mummies Made in Egypt by Alike
- Ancient Egypt (Modern Rhymes about Ancient Times) by Susan Altman
- Seeker of Knowledge: The Man Who Deciphered Egyptian Hieroglyphs (Rise and Shine) by James Rumford
- Tutankhamen’s Gift by Robert Sabuda
- Cleopatra by Diane Stanley
- Temple Cat by Andrew Clements
- The Kingfisher Atlas of the Ancient World by Simon Adams
- Ancient Egyptian Designs Coloring Book (Dover Design Coloring Books)
As I mentioned above, these books will be spread out through our entire 12 week term 1, which will give us plenty of time to explore many living ideas and stories of Ancient Egypt. I plan to share our progress occasionally on Instagram as we go through our weeks, but I will be sure to share a recap of our term 1 on the blog towards the end of our term and include our reading schedule of what I planned and what was actually done. I hope to share our term 2 Ancient History booklist for Ancient Europe (Using some of Ambleside Online Year 1‘s booklist) and Ancient Mediterranean of Greece and Rome in the coming weeks once I finalize our booklist. Stay tuned!
